What are the risk factors for peripheral artery disease?

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) occurs when the leg arteries begin to narrow, typically due to atherosclerosis or the accumulation of plaque in your artery walls. This reduces blood flow which allows oxygen-rich blood to enter the skin and muscles and affects your ability to walk and treat injuries. Plaque ruptures can also occur which can cause blood clots that could restrict or even completely block the flow of blood.
